Our love and attention

is focussed on children with disabilities and their families

Camps

A special part of the work we do are camps.  They have become standout events for the carers and their children.  It is where relationships between carers are formed, strengthened, and together they are better equipped to care for their children with disabilities. It is also a very special time for the staff and volunteers who all come together to take part. We consider the camps to be a highlight of the ministry we've been trusted with.

During the year Timion runs 3 different types of camps for caregivers with children with disabilities.

Caregiver Rest Camp

The Timion team and volunteers host caregivers and their children for a time of rest and encouragement in Jeffreys Bay. The camp is held over a period of 4 days and aims to give caregivers a break from their daily routines, an opportunity to build friendships with other caregivers in similar situations and be reminded of God’s love for them. The children are taken care of by the Timion Team and volunteers who provide an opportunity for them to engage in meaningful activities like going to the beach, doing crafts and sensory play. This camp is highly valued amongst the whole team as it gives us an opportunity to get to know the families, spending quality time with them in a loving and safe environment. We also encourage the caregivers to keep in contact after the camp by facilitating support groups in the communities where they live.

Caregiver Training Camp

Timion values the empowerment of caregivers who have a child with a disability. In 2017 we started a new initiative where we invite caregivers to come to Jeffrey’s Bay with the aim of sharing information about Cerebral Palsy. We teach about what can be done in daily life to help a caregiver to support his/her child in reaching their full potential in a reality where access to therapeutic resources are limited. Our aim is for the caregiver to understand the nature of their child’s disability and therefore be able to meet the needs of the child. The camp is held over a period of 5 days and each day has specific workshops where the mothers receive information in their mother tongue and have an opportunity to practice what they learn in the presence of trained professionals.

Debrief Camp

In November 2018 we pioneered our first debrief camp. We use a Christian model to help an individual work through events of the past to find healing and restoration. Debrief camps are beneficial for everyone but have an especially great impact on the caregivers of children with a disability as they are offered the rare opportunity of time and space to stop, reflect, and deal with the disappointments and hurts from their past. While the caregivers are taking part in the debrief the children are cared for by the Timion team.
